What is an Energy Cost Calculator?

How is the running cost calculated?

It converts the appliance's wattage to kilowatts (watts ÷ 1,000) and multiplies by the hours you run it each day to get kilowatt-hours per day. That daily energy times your price per kWh gives the daily cost, which is scaled by your billing days for the monthly figure and by 365 for the yearly figure.

Where do I find an appliance's wattage and my rate?

Wattage is usually printed on the appliance's rating label, in its manual, or on the power supply; for heating and cooling devices it's often 1,000 to 1,500 watts. Your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour is on your utility bill — use the total cost per kWh including delivery charges for the most realistic estimate.

Why is my real bill higher than this estimate?

This tool prices the energy one device uses. Your actual bill also includes fixed service charges, taxes, tiered or time-of-use rates, and every other appliance in the home. Devices on standby or in an always-on mode draw power beyond their active hours too, so treat the result as a per-appliance guide, not a whole-home total.
